What Is Dysport?

Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) is an FDA-approved injectable neuromodulator made from botulinum toxin type A, produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Like Botox, Dysport works by temporarily blocking the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction, preventing targeted facial muscles from contracting and smoothing the dynamic wrinkles they create.

Dysport was originally developed in the United Kingdom in the 1990s and has been used in Europe for both therapeutic and cosmetic purposes for over two decades. It received FDA approval in the United States in 2009 for the treatment of moderate to severe glabellar lines (frown lines between the eyebrows). Today, it is one of the most widely used neuromodulators worldwide, with millions of treatments administered annually.

How Dysport Differs from Botox

While Dysport and Botox share the same active ingredient — botulinum toxin type A — and work through the same mechanism, there are clinically meaningful differences that make each product better suited for certain situations.

Faster Onset

Dysport typically takes effect within 2 to 3 days after injection, compared to 3 to 5 days for Botox. This faster onset is attributed to Dysport's smaller molecular size, which allows it to bind to nerve receptors and begin blocking acetylcholine more quickly. For patients with an event, vacation, or important occasion approaching, Dysport's quicker onset can be a significant advantage.

Greater Spread for Large Areas

Dysport has a smaller protein complex than Botox, which gives it a broader diffusion pattern after injection. This means Dysport spreads more evenly across a larger area from each injection point. For large, flat muscle groups like the frontalis (forehead), this broader spread produces smoother, more even results with potentially fewer injection points.

Conversely, Botox's more localized effect can be advantageous in areas where precision is paramount — such as the glabella (between the eyebrows) or crow's feet, where you want the product to stay exactly where it is placed.

Unit Equivalence

Dysport and Botox use different unit measurements and are not interchangeable on a 1:1 basis. The commonly used conversion ratio is approximately 2.5 to 3 Dysport units for every 1 Botox unit. For example, a patient who typically receives 20 units of Botox for frown lines would receive approximately 50 to 60 units of Dysport for the same treatment. This difference is purely a matter of measurement — it does not mean Dysport is weaker or that you are receiving more product.

Duration

Both Dysport and Botox typically last 3 to 4 months. Some clinical studies and patient reports suggest Dysport may last slightly longer in certain treatment areas, though individual variation makes direct comparisons difficult. Both products offer excellent longevity, and with consistent treatments, many patients experience progressively longer-lasting results.

Dysport Treatment Areas

Dysport is effective across all the standard neuromodulator treatment areas:

• Forehead lines — Dysport's broader spread makes it particularly well-suited for the forehead. It produces even, natural-looking smoothing across the entire frontalis muscle with excellent coverage. This is where many providers consider Dysport to be the superior choice.
• Glabellar lines (frown lines / "11s") — the vertical lines between the eyebrows caused by the corrugator and procerus muscles. This is Dysport's FDA-approved cosmetic indication.
• Crow's feet — the lines radiating from the outer corners of the eyes during smiling and squinting. Dysport effectively softens these while preserving natural expression.
• Bunny lines — diagonal wrinkles on the bridge of the nose caused by the nasalis muscle.
• Lip lines — fine vertical lines above the upper lip, treated with small doses to soften creasing while maintaining natural lip movement.
• Neck bands (platysmal bands) — the vertical cords on the neck that become more prominent with age, treated to create a smoother neck profile.
• Masseter reduction — Dysport can be injected into the masseter muscles to slim the jawline and reduce teeth grinding (bruxism).

What to Expect During Your Dysport Treatment

Dysport treatment at Rewind Anti-Aging follows the same streamlined process as Botox:

• Consultation: Your provider examines your facial anatomy, discusses your concerns and goals, and recommends whether Dysport or Botox is the better option for your treatment areas.
• Procedure time: 15 to 30 minutes. The actual injection process is often less than 10 minutes — most of the appointment is consultation and planning.
• Discomfort: Minimal. Ultra-fine 30-32 gauge needles are used, and each injection feels like a brief pinch lasting only seconds. No anesthesia is required.
• Onset: Results begin to appear within 2 to 3 days as muscle activity gradually decreases.
• Full effect: The complete result is visible at 10 to 14 days. A two-week follow-up allows us to assess your results and make any adjustments if needed.
• Duration: Results last 3 to 4 months on average.

Who Should Choose Dysport Over Botox?

Both products deliver excellent results, and your provider will recommend the best option based on your anatomy and goals. However, Dysport may be the better choice if you:

• Want to see results as quickly as possible (Dysport's 2-3 day onset)
• Are primarily treating the forehead, where Dysport's broader spread offers particularly even coverage
• Have tried Botox in the past and want to explore an alternative neuromodulator
• Have found that Botox wears off slightly sooner than desired and want to try a product that may last longer for you individually
• Have a large treatment area where fewer injection points are desirable

Many patients develop a preference for one product after trying both. At Rewind Anti-Aging, we respect that preference and accommodate it — while also using our clinical judgment to recommend the product best suited to each specific treatment area.

Side Effects of Dysport

Dysport shares the same excellent safety profile as Botox. Side effects are typically mild and temporary:

• Bruising — small bruises at injection sites, typically resolving within 3 to 7 days. Minimized by avoiding blood thinners and alcohol before treatment.
• Headache — mild headache reported by some patients in the hours following treatment, usually resolving within 24 hours.
• Swelling or redness — slight puffiness at injection sites that fades within a few hours.
• Eyelid drooping (ptosis) — rare with experienced injectors. Resolves on its own within 2 to 4 weeks if it occurs.

Important note: Dysport contains a trace amount of cow's milk protein (lactose) in its formulation. Patients with a known allergy to cow's milk protein should not receive Dysport and should opt for Botox instead. This is the only meaningful contraindication that distinguishes the two products.
